Miss Sixty fashion show Fall 2008

Bring out the bohemians. The Miss Sixty fashion show was all about hippie haute couture and and an updated version of sixties. The girls channeled rock n’ roll groupies with long, flowing dresses underneath fur trimmed coats. Of course, there was plenty of denim — mostly trouser style paired with swingy vests, fringe, and knit caps. Penny Lane would be proud.

Max Azria’s revival of the Herve Leger label was filled with fine young things all sporting the iconic bandage dresses. Joy Bryant popped in yummy tangerine, Mandy Moore smoldered in charcoal, and Melissa George glowed in slinky snow white.

Florals for fall? Why not. If anyone can pull it off, it’s Erin Fetherston. I have the teal trousers from her Target Go International line and while sometimes her clothes tend to be a bit cutesy for my tastes, I found a lot of her pieces for fall to be romantic without being too twee. I loved her use of florals on a darker color palette and her strapless dresses paired with tights and flats were the show stealer.

What were you expecting from Rock and Republic? Florals and lace? True to their image as the purveyors of rock chic, the Rock and Republic fashion show sent out tough girl leathers and body hugging dresses. The color palette was black, grey, and more black with an occasional purple frock making it to the catwalk.

In past seasons, I haven’t really been thrilled by the Baby Phat collection. I’ve enjoyed Kimora’s over-the-top-ness (she’s so extra) and loved seeing platinum grills on the runway, but as far as the actual clothes, something didn’t quite grab me. This season though, no grills, no Omahyrah, but great clothes that I would actually wear.

The fall Baby Phat collection pulled it’s inspiration from flappers and glamorous women of a bygone era. Models strutted the runway in dropped waist dresses that sparkled with sequins and super-fierce model Wakeema Hollis bared her plumage in a purple feathered mini. Lengthier looks had models carrying cigarette holders and playing the vamp in gowns fit for a silent movie star. Other pieces embraced cabaret style with bowler hats topping satin tap pants with attached garters that were very similar to Dior’s spring ‘08 collection.

Overall, the looks were more refined and a bit of a departure from the blinged out basics of classic Baby Phat. If the Djimon diet has revealed a more sophisticated side of Kimora, I suggest she stick with it.
