Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 @ NY Fashion Week

The Diane von Furstenberg collection is always one of my New York Fashion Week favorites. She does bohemian sophistication like no one else and her Spring 2010 collection found her on a global journey, picking up influences from every corner of the world. Grecian draped dresses, leopard prints, beaded and embroidered minis met in a wonderful cross-cultural mix.

There were light and airy pieces like a floral maxidress while hammered gold pieces anchored a thigh-skimming shift. Her ethnic looks certainly took you on a sensory vacation, but pieces like a structured, gold blazer also provided you with some wardrobe-building pieces.

Rachel Roy is coming on strong this season with a lower priced diffusion line — Rachel by Rachel Roy (available at Macys) — and the Spring collection of her original line showing at NY Fashion Week in a low-key presentation.

This collection was a throwback to old Hollywood glamour, taking its influences from 1940’s screen sirens like Katherine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth. Beautifully tailored pants, breezy blouses, and elegantly draped dresses gave off a slouchy sophistication while brilliant punches of color livened the whole thing up.

Marc Jacobs is known for playing with different periods and the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2010 collection was a complete throwback to the ’80s punk era. From the spiked hair, printed tights and structured elements on a dress, he completely embraced the era with a collection that embraced the decade of excess.

Oscar de la Renta knows the key to my heart…leopard print!

The Park Avenue locale was the perfect setting for the uptown fashion that he’s known for. Oscar never disappoints and came through with high fashion separates, suits, cocktail dresses and evening gowns.

The aubergine pants from Oscar de la Renta Fall/Winter 2008 made another appearance and I’m finding them just as crave-worthy as before. I love the long lines and precise tailoring of the Oscar de la Renta trouser. They pair pefectly with a ruffled silk blouse from last season or a slim, leopard-printed knit from this season.

I loooooove Matthew Williamson!

I adore the way he uses ethnic prints and even when he had a bit of a dust-up over being a little too inspired by the Ethiopian national costume in his Spring/Summer ‘08 collection, I still loved his swag.

Well, the Matthew Williamson Fall/Winter 2010 collection just gave me more of what I love — rich color, ethnic beading, and a certain global je ne sais quoi.

High points: chunky knits, hand beading on sexy dresses and color explosions that take you from India to Africa and beyond.

Low points: not a damn thing.

They always turn out perfect gowns that won’t get you on anyone’s “worst dressed list” and I’m pretty sure at this point, they can sew these gowns with their eyes closed.

But this year, instead of playing it safe, Badgley Mischka rocked it out a little bit with gold lame, tiers of pewter tulle and embellishments that inched them out of their safety zone while still guaranteeing that you’ll look stunning — not scary.

Perfect for the Oscars, the Emmys, the SAG Awards…or you know, walking the dog and such.

For his Fall/Winter collection, Jason Wu focused on what got him here — ladylike dresses fit for a First Lady — a super-stylish one at that.

There were clothes that shifted easily from day to night — the neutral grey day dress with circular appliques on a cap sleeve and slim, grey cigarette pants paired with a cropped blazer on Jourdan Dunn.

But for Jason Wu, demure doesn’t mean dull. Cocktail dresses came in punchy chartreuse, vibrant red and regal purple colors. Dresses were made sexy with transparent, peek-a-boo panels and maribou accents.
